The garden hose trick will quickly tell you if the issue is a single hole, or your roofing system is like Swiss cheese.

Stains that appear along a line may show that water is draining pipes along a rafter or truss. Inspect that rafter starting from the top trying to find signs of water. The source may be a single hole that is sending out thin down the rafter making numerous discolorations appear in a line.

-- Separating the leakage. Know the ridgeline. When you are inspecting a home, be aware of the direction the roof ridgeline runs as you inspect the interior. If you stumble upon a ceiling stain toward the middle of your house near where the ridgeline is above you, the source of the water is much easier to isolate. Water does not stream up! So, the suspect area extends from approximately the stain location, as much as the ridgeline. In many cases, that's a lot less roof to examine.

On the other plumber hand when discolorations are out near the roofing edges, they are the trickiest to detect. Why? The source of the water could be from greater in the roof than where the stain is. The water might be getting under a shingle near the peak, draining pipes down in between the shingles and ply, and finally dripping at the point you are seeing the best local plumber stain. It's simply hard to tell upon preliminary evaluation. Enter into the roofing system and check out the rafters around that location for indications of water discolorations? If you're fortunate you'll see light and a hole. If you're not that lucky, it's time to get on the roof and see what you can discover.
